James Prescott Joule (1818-1889) presents the “last experimental research of any magnitude that Joule undertook” and includes the results of Joule's final experiments by the direct method of friction. In this paper, Joule presents his final measurement of the mechanical equivalent of heat. It is well worth noting that Joule chose the number ‘772.55’ as an inscription for his gravestone. ‘772.55’ is Joule’s climacteric measurement of the mechanical equivalent of heat – the one arrived at in this paper. Also see our #27506 for Joule's earlier paper, "On the Mechanical Equivalent of Heat" (pp. 61-82)
Also contains William Crooke's "The Bakerian Lecture: On Repulsion Resulting from Radiation. Part V" (pp. 243-318); see also our #27563, "On Attraction and Repulsion Resulting from Radiation" (pp. 501-527).
