Mount Vernon, NY: William Edwin Rudge, 1928-1934, 1936. Hardcover. Limited Edition. Produced in an edition of various sizes, from quartos to elephant folio, this set also contains reproductions of artwork and manuscripts. Volumes are all in Very Good condition except for Volume 6 ("The Making of the Life of Johnson" -- Boswell's most popular work.) which has paper splitting at the front and rear hinge from head of spine down to midpoint front and rear but with the spine still tight to the text block. Also contains the 1936 volume, "Boswell's Tour of the Hebridges" published by The Viking Press in the same format without the bookplate mentioned below but with the appropriate copy # (254) inscribed at the colophon. All of the slipcases present and vary in condition from Good to Very Good. Designed by Bruce Rogers. Very Good.
This set is was produced in an edition of 570, this copy being #254. All volumes except "Boswell's Tour" contain the bookplates of Harriet and Wintrhop Aldrich. Winthrop Williams Aldrich (1885-1974) was Ambassador to the Court of St. James from 1953 to 1957. Aldrich was also the brother of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Harriet Crocker Alexander (1888-1972) was the daughter of Charles B. Alexander and Harriet Crocker, and the granddaughter of Charles Crocker, one of the builders of the Central Pacific Railroad.
