Eliot Porter (1901-1990) is closely identified with the lavish color photographs reproduced in the various books he published with the Sierra Club. His photographs of the canyons now drowned by the Glen Canyon Dam, sparked a new resistance against reclamation projects in the 1960s. Porter's mastery of black and white photography can be too easily forgotten; this volume reminds us of that mastery when he turned his lens on the American Southwest, his home over forty years.
